Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep to inaugurate the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection. During his visit, he also laid the foundation stone for the refurbishment of a primary healthcare facility and five model Anganwadi centers. Subsequent to his trip, a social media post by a Maldives minister sparked controversy.
Maldives minister Abdulla Mahzoom Majid asserted that India is diverting attention away from the Maldives by promoting Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination. Majid further commented that India encounters considerable challenges in competing with the Maldives in the realm of beach tourism. This dispute arises in the backdrop of strained relations between the two countries, intensified by President Mohamed Muizzu assuming power in November last year.
