According to reports, the director had been awaiting the certification for three months, but hit a roadblock when the revising committee, on December 22, 2023, rejected the film’s application.
Initially titled ‘2024 Election War,’ Modi altered the name to ‘Political War’ following objections raised by the CBFC. Despite submitting the film to the revising committee without a show-cause notice, the application was ultimately denied. The CBFC cited concerns that the faces of the film’s actors ‘resembled Indian politicians’.Expressing frustration over the certificate hindering the film’s theatrical release, Modi appealed to the PM, to pint out the challenges faced by filmmakers and deemed the CBFC officials’ response as “unsatisfactory.”
Modi urged the PM to update the system by appointing ‘competent individuals’ and preventing unnecessary delays and financial strain on filmmakers.
He emphasized that ‘Political War’ aims to inspire the youth and called for government attention to the matter.
Modi further pointed out that the board had no qualms approving ‘violent films’ in contrast to his movie, which he says, conveys a positive message.
Expressing concern about the impact of the censorship process on his project, Modi affirmed the film’s content, addressing the narrative of corrupt politicians attempting to destabilize India. While the film faces its setback in India, the director announced that ‘Political War’ will see a release in overseas theaters on February 16, followed by streaming on OTT platforms.
In a bold suggestion, the filmmaker even proposed abolishing the Censor Board, drawing a parallel with Hollywood, where no such board exists.
