Veteran screenwriter Javed Akhtar is an icon for his lyrics and also all the films that he co-wrote with Salim Khan. The Salim-Javed pairing is still considered iconic and they’re called a legendary duo! Akhtar has always been very vocal about his opinions as he calls a spade a spade always. Recently, Akhtar had criticised ‘Animal’ and now he’s made quite a bold statement about Yash Chopra’s ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan‘ with reference to the way women roles are written in movies.
Akhtar said that while the industry is trying hard to portray women as strong and empowering, it’s ridiculous because they don’t even know who an empowered woman is. He said during a chat with ABP Majha that if liberals define a modern woman, other liberals will question them and hence they hesitate to define them.He gave an example of Chopra’s ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, saying that there’s a dialogue in the movie where the heroine says, ‘I will sleep with a man of all nationalities in the world before getting married.’
However, Akhtar questions this dialogue by saying, “Why will you do so much hard work?” He further added that one doesn’t have to put in so much hard work in order to be empowered. This is because it’s a debris and they are still finding who a modern woman is, hence there are not many roles written for women.
Akhtar opined that many talented actresses like Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi did not get those big roles in their whole career like ‘Mother India’, ‘Bandini’, ‘Sujata’, ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’. The reason being, people do not know what an ideal woman is.
