Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently celebrated six glorious years of his magnum opus ‘Padmaavat‘. The film starred Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles.
In an interview with Zoom, SLB recounted the challenging incident where the film’s crew faced an attack from right-wing members. Describing the situation as intense, SLB expressed concern for his mother during the ordeal.Having his mother by his side brought him comfort, and he acknowledged her as his pillar of strength. She consistently supported him, expressing disbelief at why such incidents were happening to her son, who, according to her, makes excellent films.

He also discussed whether the attacks affected him, stating that it never did. He emphasized that letting it impact him would have marked the end of his journey as a filmmaker. Instead, every instance of an attack became a driving force for him to improve his work. SLG shared that he channeled his pain and anxiety into the creation of ‘Padmaavat,’ believing that suffering has consistently acted as a catalyst for his creativity.

The director clarified that the film draws inspiration from Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s poem ‘Padmaavat’ while also incorporating elements from actual historical events. Expressing a lifelong fascination with Rani Padmavati, he admires her grace, dignity, valor, and inner strength. The director revealed his long-standing desire to create a film depicting her life. Prior to the film, he seized the opportunity to direct a stage musical version of Padmavati, an opera composed by Albert Rousse, in Paris in 2008.

Discussing the film’s cast, the director addressed whether the actors’ previous successes or failures influenced his decision. He emphasized that the actors’ track records had no impact on his choice, expressing satisfaction with the selection of these specific actors. Regardless of their past successes or flops, he stated that he wanted these three actors and commended the quality of performances they delivered in his film.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali has announced a new project titled ‘Love and War,’ featuring a stellar cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, and Alia Bhatt. The film’s announcement was made on January 24, and it is scheduled to be released in theaters on Christmas 2025.
